About Us

About Us

South Africa has the highest youth unemployment rate in the world with over 4,7 million unemployed youth, 1,2 million of whom are graduates who employers aren't hiring because they lack experience!

Each year 250,000 fresh graduates leave tertiary and enter the job market with high hopes of landing their dream job and helping out financially at home but find themselves either unemployed or underemployed in a job that has nothing to do with the qualification they spent years and many thousands of rands to attain.

For this reason we founded IT Internships, an internship program dedicated to helping to solve the greatest socio-economic challenge facing our nation: unemployment, specifically youth unemployment.

We partner with IT students and graduates to knock on doors on their behalf to arrange a tailor made information technology internship opportunity that will help them get a foot in the door of their tech career.

So if you're an IT student or graduate who has applied time and again with no success and no feedback and are ready for a helping hand, simply apply, complete induction, attend interviews, and secure your IT internship in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, or anywhere across South Africa!

What Motivates Us

At IT Internships, we believe that every individual's talent must be harnessed and cultivated in building the South Africa we envision: an inclusive economy where one's character, value, and diligence determine one's success.

Unemployed Graduates

Many unemployed graduates, despite their impressive academic credentials and skill sets, often encounter a relentless cycle of unemployment and financial instability.

The elation stemming from their academic achievements upon graduation quickly dissipates as they come to terms with the stark reality: the absence of practical work experience coupled with a dearth of job opportunities leads them down the path of either prolonged unemployment or employment in menial jobs unrelated to their field of study, if they're fortunate enough to find any job at all!

The Experience Dilemma

The widespread problem of minimal work experience worsens the dilemma for South African students and graduates.

They frequently encounter a Catch-22 scenario: they require experience to secure employment, yet they're unable to acquire experience without a job.

This absence of hands-on exposure continues to hinder their capacity to compete efficiently in the job market, resulting in a discouraging cycle of unemployment or settling for positions that underutilize their skills and knowledge.

Sourcing Solutions

For generations, internship programs have been indispensable avenues for both American and European students and graduates, providing essential guidance for navigating the complex entry-level job markets and securing initial employment opportunities.

Throughout history, these programs have been instrumental in delivering practical experience, nurturing mentorship, and closing the divide between academic learning and real-world application.

Delivering Hope

We lead the way as South Africa's premier IT internship program, addressing a significant gap by providing local students and graduates an exceptional chance to access professional support and guidance akin to what their American and European peers have had for years.

Grounded in the belief that hands-on experience is fundamental for a successful career, we at IT Internships are committed to closing the divide between academia and the world of work, thereby reshaping how entry-level job markets are accessed in South Africa.

What do you do in an IT internship?

In an IT internship, interns typically engage in a diverse array of tasks and responsibilities aimed at gaining practical experience and contributing to the organization's technological initiatives. These may include assisting in software development projects, troubleshooting technical issues, and providing support for various IT systems. Interns often collaborate with experienced professionals to learn about software development methodologies, coding languages, and best practices in IT project management.

Additionally, interns might participate in the deployment and maintenance of hardware and software systems, gaining hands-on experience with network configurations, server administration, and database management. They may also be involved in testing and quality assurance processes, ensuring that software products meet performance standards and user requirements.

Furthermore, interns might engage in research activities to explore emerging technologies and trends in the IT industry, helping the organization stay competitive and innovative. This could involve studying topics such as cloud computing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, or data analytics, depending on the organization's focus and priorities.

Interns may also have opportunities to participate in meetings, workshops, and training sessions designed to enhance their technical skills and professional development. Through these experiences, interns not only contribute to the organization's projects but also gain valuable insights into the real-world applications of their academic knowledge.

Overall, an IT internship provides a dynamic learning environment where interns can apply theoretical concepts, refine their technical skills, and develop the practical expertise needed for a successful career in the field of information technology.

Which type of internship is best for IT students?

Determining the "best" type of internship for IT students depends on various factors, including individual career goals, interests, and skill levels. However, internships that offer hands-on experience, exposure to diverse technologies, and opportunities for mentorship and professional growth are often considered advantageous.

One beneficial type of internship for IT students is one that involves software development. This type of internship allows students to work on real-world projects, collaborate with experienced developers, and gain proficiency in programming languages, development frameworks, and software engineering principles. Through software development internships, students can enhance their coding skills, learn about the software development lifecycle, and build a portfolio of projects that demonstrate their abilities to potential employers.

Another valuable option for IT students is an internship in cybersecurity. With the increasing prevalence of cyber threats and data breaches, cybersecurity skills are in high demand. Internships in cybersecurity provide students with opportunities to learn about network security, vulnerability assessment, incident response, and ethical hacking techniques. By gaining hands-on experience in cybersecurity, students can develop critical skills to protect organizations' digital assets and mitigate cyber risks.

Furthermore, internships in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data analytics offer IT students valuable exposure to cutting-edge tools and methodologies. These internships enable students to explore innovative solutions, tackle complex problems, and stay abreast of industry trends, positioning them well for future career opportunities in rapidly evolving technology domains.

Ultimately, the best type of internship for IT students is one that aligns with their career interests, allows them to apply their skills in a real-world setting, and offers opportunities for learning, growth, and professional development. By choosing internships strategically and actively engaging in meaningful experiences, IT students can maximize their internship experiences and pave the way for a successful career in the field of information technology.

How much do IT interns earn in South Africa?

The compensation for IT interns in South Africa varies depending on several factors, including the intern's level of experience, the specific industry or company they're interning with, and the region where the internship takes place. Generally, IT interns in South Africa can expect to earn a stipend or salary that ranges from approximately ZAR 3,000 to ZAR 10,000 per month.

Interns in entry-level positions or those with limited experience may receive lower compensation, typically toward the lower end of the range. Conversely, interns with more advanced skills, relevant coursework, or prior internship experience may command higher salaries.

The industry sector also plays a significant role in determining intern salaries. Internships at tech companies, software development firms, or IT consulting firms tend to offer higher compensation compared to internships in non-tech industries. Additionally, internships in urban centers such as Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban may provide higher pay rates due to the higher cost of living in these areas.

Furthermore, some internships may offer additional benefits such as transportation allowances, meal stipends, or access to training and development programs, which can enhance the overall compensation package.

Overall, while IT intern salaries in South Africa generally fall within the aforementioned range, the exact compensation can vary widely based on individual circumstances and the specific internship opportunity. It's essential for prospective interns to research typical salary ranges for their desired roles and negotiate compensation based on their qualifications and the prevailing market conditions.
